Abstract

Throughout the course of this past Trimester I wanted to avoid the need for conclusion and totality in the pieces that I worked with.  I researched applications of the background and primarily worked with the working, constructing medium of drawing. My aim at the start was to build a solid foundation of interests and research that I could pull from and eventually evolve to make more art in the future.

During the course of this year I engaged with many ideas: The Figurative, Geometry and The Grid, Evidence of Transience, The Background, Understated Language of Body, Poses and Empathy, Communication of Identity, Ways of seeing and Dichotomies. Some literature and references that have been involved in my research are Vitamin P, Vitamin D, and John Berger’s Ways Of Seeing television series. Research artists that have informed and influenced the direction of my research were primarily: Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, Chantal Joffe, John Currin, and Euan Uglow.

Material Processes that I regularly use in my practice include photography, sketching, perspective, drawing, charcoal, painting, glazing, scale, and working from series. Areas of research I am interested in pursuing are the application and functions of figurative and realist art, contemporary and historical figurative art practices, treatment of the human form, and different theories of the gaze and voyeurism.

I aim to continue my work with the human face and form. I want to further my material exploration to possibly begin working with pastel, water, and charcoal on a larger scale. I aim to work with a live sitter for a reference. I intend to continue making large scale portraits on canvas and paper, possibly incorporating more of the body. I plan to make large portraits from life, possibly using different angles to explore the form at the same time and continue to develop the pathway of making drawings of people occupied in an activity or space. I intend to continue all strands of research and approaches.

A sample of works from my studio practice from my Undergraduate Studies at The National College of Art and Design in Dublin.
